Abstract: This paper focuses on the formation of the Czech Army and the Slovak Army (since 2002, the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic) and their development following the dissolution of the federation. It compares how both armies, following their independence, responded to current trends in the European (and later Euro-Atlantic) security (defense) sphere—whether in the period before both countries joined NATO, or afterward, up to the deployment of troops from both countries in Afghanistan. It seeks to determine how they have coped not only with Alliance membership, but also with the need to professionalize their armed forces and the opportunity to participate in overseas operations. Is it possible to speak of the same or similar direction for both Central European armies? Alternatively: what are the specific features and differences in their development? What commonalities or differences can be found in the strategic defense documents of both countries?
