Abstract: The study recapitulates the most important results of research into the modernization of the rural environment of Moravia in the last roughly half a century before the First World War. In this period, there was a civic and national activation of the countryside, and both of these components need to be studied simultaneously, as they were inseparably linked. The study focuses primarily on local transfer links, i.e. initiators and implementers of the rural modernization process. Such transfer links were, on the one hand, local leaders, then the institutions in which they operated (schools, associations), and, last but not least, social processes that were established mainly, though not exclusively, through these individuals and institutions in the rural environment (political activation, secularization). Specific examples are selected mainly from the region of East Moravian Wallachia. The research included not only villages, but also towns - the seats of rural districts, as they were the key channels, the „forerunners“ through which the phenomenon of social change reached the villages.
