Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the loyalty of the administrative elite in the context of the Czechoslovak post-war policy of linking basic civil rights to ethnicity. This policy had a significant impact on the ethnic and social structure of the population living in southern Slovakia, including Košice. It also affected the composition of the city‘s political elite. The previous political elite was excluded from further participation in political power. The research therefore focuses on the career trajectories of the administrative elite during the period under study. I consider chosen officials to be the key figures of this transitional period. In the first months after the liberation of the city, they ran the city, ensured the basic functioning of the office, and dealt with the personnel, economic, financial and supply issues. I examine the career trajectories of selected officials within the concept of loyalty, which I find to be a useful analytical tool for research on the stability and transformation of political systems.
