Abstract: The contribution is devoted to the pitfalls of using the concept of elites and counterelites in the teaching of history at the elementary school level. It regards the problematic nature of the traditional dominance of political history, taking into account the legacy of the Annales school, the building of historical thinking/literacy and the current direction of the discussion on the reform of the history curriculum in the Czech Republic. The paper concludes with an illustrative, inquiry-based didactic lesson, an example of how, using a traditional topic from the Czech early Middle Ages, both the knowledge typical of the traditional „curriculum“ and the skills expected from the currently revised educational curriculum in the Czech Republic can be taught in elementary school, ephasising on skills, activation teaching methods and i.a. also formative assessment. This traditional topic is a story from the 10th century, the well-known case of prince Oldřich and his concubine Božena, with an emphasis on the dynamics of gender stereotypes in contemporary popularizing media and the continuity/discontinuity of maintaining political power.
