Abstract: The text focuses on film representations of the Slovak National Uprising of 1944 in Slovakia and its image in Czechoslovak and mainly Slovak cinematography of the 1950s and 1960s. It presents the topic as a significant political issue of the time, a controversial moment in demands for changes in the constitutional order, and a taboo subject. After 1948, the conflictual politics of memory naturally also found its way into its film images. The films presented represent several tendencies: immediately post-war, after the silence of the Stalinist period, the disillusioned films of the second half of the 1950s, and the more civil and psychological film production of the 1960s. Films such as Kapitán Dabač (Captain Dabač, 1959), Pieseň o sivom holubovi (Song of the Grey Pigeon, 1961), and Zvony pre bosých (Bells for the Barefoot, 1965) are broadly related to the contemporary debate and shifts in interpretations of the uprising.
