Abstract: This brief comparative Hungarian-Slovak historiographical survey examines the content and impact of the unresolved issues of the two revolutionary years of 1848-1849 in Hungary, which are discussed primarily from national perspectives as a unified revolutionary process. Accepting the scenario of a “lawful revolution”, underpinned by the laws passed at the last meeting of the Diet of Hungary, it compares interpretations of the civil transformation of the country, the abolition of most of the feudal ties and aristocratic privileges, as well as the space for the application of constitutional monarchy. To this day, the Hungarian revolutions are still interpreted largely as national revolutions, although they were more successful in the social sphere than in the realization of national goals.
