Abstract: This paper discusses curricular documents and the target skills that pupils were are expected to acquire based on them. It also describes the methods and forms of teaching history which were, under the guidance of teachers, intended to help shape pupils’ historical consciousness. Additionally, it examines the role of the history textbook as a basic didactic aid for both teachers and pupils. What is important in this regard is not only the content (information and facts) presented, but also, and especially, the principles for working with resources, ways of assigning tasks and the formulation of questions. The analytical part of the paper focuses on the most widely used textbooks in the Czech Republic, specifically analysis of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the Slovak State. It also examines the forms of questions and other tasks assigned to pupils. In the conclusion, the analysis is briefly evaluated and discussed.
